Description:

MERGE: Males Engaged in Reducing Violence through Gainful Employment will engage 450 young men over three years from several housing developments in Atlantic City and from judicial referrals. Building from several model and evidence-based programs, Youth Advocates Programs will help young men ages 14-24 build better coping strategies, enhance academic achievement, and improve their social climate and job skills with a focus on improving education and employment, and reducing substance abuse/use, gang involvement and violence among this population. Partners include major employers in Atlantic City and the community college, working together to provide educational opportunities, payment for instruction and testing, job skills training, life skills training, health and substance abuse counseling and services, group services to help youth deal with aggression, and intensive advocacy/mentoring services. |

Health Literacy Initiative |

Description:

To improve the health literacy of immigrants in Atlantic and Cape May Counties, AtlantiCare will take a two-pronged approach. In partnership with Literacy Volunteers of America, a Basic Health Literacy program will consist of eight, two-hour sessions educating participants to understand and utilize basic health information. The Chronic Disease Self-Management program will focus on individuals with chronic disease or caretakers of such individuals, and will train community members using culturally appropriate materials as peer leaders to conduct the program in community-based settings. |

Atlantic County Teen Choice |

Description:

To educate adolescents on establishing healthy relationships and address the issue of teen dating violence, Inwood House Atlantic County Teen Choice program staff will deliver the 'Safe Dates': curriculum to 8th and 9th grade students in three schools in Atlantic County: Buena Regional High School, Alder Avenue Middle School and Fernwood Avenue Middle School. The program social workers will conduct 'Safe Dates' trainings at the Egg Harbor Township Family Center during the summers of the 2nd and 3rd years of the program implementation. |

Short term individual and group level skills building and education interventions using the Real AIDS Prevention Project (RAPP) will address the HIV prevention needs of 18 - 45 year old female detainees in the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility (Atlantic County Jail). |
