Pathways to Health
Description:
Focusing on the low-income, uninsured immigrant population in Bergen County, Bergen County Community Action Partnership will use the Expecting the Best curriculum to enhance its current English as a Second Language program with a 15 hour health literacy component. Through a partnership with Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative (BVMI), program participants will receive direct health counseling from a nurse practitioner. Healthcare practitioners at BVMI will participate in in-service training focusing on cultural differences and the impact of language on healthcare and compliance with medical protocols.

Project Title:
Nuestra Salud
Description:
In partnership with the Hispanic Institute for Research and Development, the Northern NJ Maternal/Child Health Consortium will incorporate the Expecting the Best health literacy curriculum into English as a Second Language (ESL) courses offered in Hackensack, North Branch, and Camden. The program will provide learners with practical examples that are likely to occur as they encounter the NJ healthcare system by incorporating five hours of health literacy content into each 40-hour ESL course.
