Lead-Poisoned Children in the U.S. – A PHI California Environmental Health Tracking Program Interactive Map & Report
Using new analytical methods in its latest study, the Public Health Institute’s California Environmental Health Tracking Program reports that the numbers of U.S. childhood lead poisoning cases may be higher than previously found. These new findings suggest that existing data on lead poisoning do not communicate the full scope of the problem, and that during 1999-2000, most states may have found only two out of every three children poisoned by lead. Paired with a decline in screening and testing rates, the researchers advise that many cases of childhood lead poisoning will remain undiagnosed. A set of interactive maps illustrates how many cases were identified in each state, and their location.
