To improve the health literacy of immigrants in Atlantic and Cape May Counties, AtlantiCare has taken a two-pronged approach. In partnership with Literacy Volunteers of America, a Basic Health Literacy program consists of eight, two-hour sessions educating participants to understand and utilize basic health information. The Chronic Disease Self-Management program  focuses on individuals with chronic disease or caretakers of such individuals, and trains community members using culturally appropriate materials as peer leaders to conduct the program in community-based settings.
