Jefferson Park Ministries has adapted the SHINE health literacy model for cultural relevance to the Haitian adult population to serve Union and Essex County adult immigrant Haitians with low literacy or limited English proficiency in their native language of Creole. The initiative encompasses: training of 150 health professionals about Haitian culture and beliefs and communication barriers; providing 25 five session cycles of health literacy education to adult Haitian immigrants, focusing on accessing health care and communicating with health care staff and learning about symptoms, diseases and medications; and outreach to Haitians through the Haitian Short Wave Radio system and churches.
