New Jersey Health Initiatives - A Better State of Health
A Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Program
A New Day

Residents of Morristown census tract 435 came out to our April coalition meeting to hear from the new Executive Director of the Morristown Housing Authority (MHA), Keith Kinard. Mr. Kinard spoke about his new vision for the housing authority to improve current residents’ living conditions and build new buildings. The Housing Authority will also focus on building relationships with residents, and partnerships with community-based organizations. The MHA will open a rolling request for proposals for service providers to provide programming at housing authority residences. They will also hold monthly meetings with service providers to discuss opportunities for collaboration.Morristown United for Healthy Living Coalition community organizers and street captains are excited to work with the new Morristown Housing Authority Resident Board. Residents are committed to working to improve their community, create new partnerships, and build trust with the new leadership. In the past there have been broken promises, neglect, and lack of trust. To move forward productively, partnerships, open communication and building capacity of resident leaders is essential.

The Street Captain Initiative is an important foundation that this new work with the housing authority will build upon. Street Captains are trained resident leaders who spread awareness of the community resources to their neighbors. Street Captains also gather input from their fellow residents to help identify needs and possible solutions for improving the safety and condition of homes within their neighborhood.
