Positive Movement in the Community!
March 13, 2017 / Healthier Perth Amboy

The Culture of Health Coalition is making positive movements in the community of Perth Amboy. The six work groups—Workplace Wellness, Healthy Corner Stores & Restaurants, Schools & Child Care Centers, Health Care Centers, Faith Based Community and Community—have been strongly engaging with stakeholders and community members alike.

Many weeks have been dedicated to working together to draft and complete our Resource Inventory Report (see link below. The report outlines the methods used to collect data and the results of a corner stores and physical activity inventory, as well as suggested improvements. This report will serve as a great foundation for  our Healthy Corner Stores and Restaurants & Community Culture of Health Grant work groups.

Hard work and dedication pays off. The Healthy Corner Stores & Restaurants work group was awarded a New Jersey Corner Store Initiative mini-grant through the New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids (NJPHK) and The Food Trust. This funding will support the Healthy Food Marketing Campaign, development of Nutrition Education and Outreach Materials, and Store Owner Trainings.

This mini-grant signifies progress toward a healthier Perth Amboy. The NJPHK grant aims for an increase in the availability, visibility, promotions and sales of healthy foods—it is a big step forward in shifting to a more positive outlook for a healthier community. Community engagement will play a vital role as we seek to learn from residents what they would like to see within corner stores. Both work groups will work closely with community members to create changes that are both welcomed and sustained.

All of our work groups are committed to connecting community leaders with residents to build a mutual process of making Perth Amboy a healthier place to live, work, play, learn and visit.
